"Be drawn to the visual arts, for it can expand your imagination."

Did You Know?

  • "The visual arts can enhance cognition, emotional expression, perception, cultural awareness, and aesthetics?

  • The visual arts include design, art production, paper and canvas work, photography, drawing, illustration, and painting. They are also demonstrated by technical theatre work and today students are using technology as a visual medium.

  • Visual arts and cognition: Of all the effects on cognition, visual arts seem to be the strongest when used as a tool for academic learning. For example, drawing can strengthen memory, thinking skills, and verbal skills. It can all also improve reading and math scores.

  • Visual arts and aesthetics: Visual arts enhance aesthetic judgment and appreciation for other art. It also trains students to have a sense of continuity, better idea of quality work, and reflective thinking.

  • Visual arts and emotional expression: It is said that humans do art because of the mere pleasure for it. Making and observing visual art seems to enhance our ability to elicit and mediate our emotional responses.

  • Visual arts and cultural awareness: Visual art curriculum develops and shares cross culture heritage. It enhances teamwork and community building. It can also reach special populations such as: students with disabilities, emotional problems, cognitive defitics, and mild retardation

In The Classroom:

  • Schools should introduce children to three aspects of visual art: the pleasure of it, the functionality of it, and the study of it.

  • Teach art as a joy. Be a role model and allow students to experience the beauty of visual arts!

  • Bring in examples of art that you like.

  • Let students share their art with the class.

  • Students should be able to participate and experience art, not just listen to the teacher talk about it.

  • Give students choices in using visual tools.

  • Provide adequate training in visual arts tools." (Jenson, p. 49-67)
